API 510 Inspection Service

The API 510 inspection code covers in-service inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating activities for pressure vessels and the pressure-relieving devices protecting these vessels. This code applies to all hydrocarbon and chemical process vessels that have been placed in service, unless specifically excluded per section 1.2.2. It can also be applied to process vessels in other industries at the owner/user's discretion.

Key Aspects of API 510

Applicable to

Vessels constructed in accordance with an applicable construction code (e.g., ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code).

Non-Code Vessels

Those not fabricated to a recognized construction code and meeting no known recognized standard.

Jurisdictional Special Vessels

Constructed and approved based on jurisdictional acceptance of specific design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and installation.

Nonstandard Vessels

Fabricated to a recognized construction code but have lost their nameplate or stamping.

API 653 Inspection Service

The API 653 inspection code covers tank inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction. This inspection method promotes the safe storage and material handling of petroleum products, protecting employees, the public, and the environment. Developed with the participation of storage tank owners/users, it establishes a uniform national program to assist companies and state and local governments in aboveground storage tank regulations.
